A Family Friendly Day Trip to Helen, Georgia

While only a little over two-square miles in size, Helen, Georgia, packs big charm! This picturesque city is just north of Atlanta, Georgia, and only miles from Cleveland, Georgia, making it the perfect stop on any road trip. Here’s why we suggest Helen, Georgia for a family friendly day trip.

What makes Helen so unique?

Noted as Georgia’s third most visited city, there are so many activities you and your family can explore to get a small glimpse of German culture. Whether you’re into shopping, nature, or water sports, Helen has something for everyone.

Anna Ruby Falls

Named for Anna Ruby Nichols, this double waterfall is found in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The walking trail that leads to the waterfalls is paved, which is a huge plus for strollers! Swing by the Visitor’s Center and check out the programs they host throughout the year. I’m dying to check out the Firefox program, which allows you to view a bioluminescent insect larva. The trail is open year-round, and there is a small fee ($5 for adults) for you to explore the area.

Explore Downtown

Taking a walk through downtown, you’ll swear you’re in a German village. The Bavarian-style buildings house some unique shops and eateries, including handmade, wooden toys, and hand-blown glass gifts. While you’re in downtown, take a picture in front of the beautiful murals or the scenic river. There are so many options for beautiful pictures!

Hardman Farm

Built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, the house on Hardman Farm boasts an interesting telephone and climate control system. When touring, visitors can also see the bedroom of Anna Ruby Nichols, the namesake of Anna Ruby Falls. The most visited site on the farm isn’t the house, but the Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound that’s found on the property. The mound is a Native American burial site. In order to preserve the land, visitors can get close to the mound; however, they are prohibited from walking on it. To find out more about these 173 acres, follow this link.

Tubing

Jump in tubes and head down the Chattahoochee River for just over two hours in one of Helen’s most popular tourist activities. You even float right through downtown Helen! My friends who have experienced tubing are obsessed with how peaceful and beautiful it is. I can’t wait to go back in warmer weather and give it a try!

Ziplining

Unicoi State Park offers three different ziplining adventures ranging from 1 to 4 hours! Each level steps up the adrenaline a bit, with the one-hour canopy tour being the perfect adventure for a family. Please be aware that ziplining at this location is only available to kids age 8 and older.

When’s the best time to go?

While there truly isn’t a bad time to visit Helen, Georgia, Oktoberfest or Christmas times would be the ideal times to go. For Oktoberfest, the city comes alive with traditional German fare. From September to October, you’ll be able to experience traditional dancing, food, and beer. There’s even a parade! If you choose to visit around the Christmas season, you’ll be able to experience all of the jaw-dropping holiday decorations. It’s also the perfect time to pick up a few gifts for those on your list. There’s even a huge tree downtown!
