The Best Locations to See in St. Louis, Missouri

Our trip to St. Louis, Missouri, a city rich in history and culture, was full of exploration and adventure. The best part is that it offers a plethora of family-friendly attractions that are perfect for exploring with a toddler. From stunning architectural wonders to scenic riverfront adventures, there’s no shortage of exciting experiences to share with your little one. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through our experience in St. Louis, highlighting key locations like the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, the Gateway Arch, a St. Louis riverfront cruise on a riverboat, and the charming Citygarden. We’ll also provide valuable tips and tricks to help you navigate the city seamlessly and make the most of your family adventure. Here are the best locations to see in St. Louis, Missouri.

Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis

The awe-inspiring Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is something you must add to your trip. With its distinctive green-tiled roof, this architectural masterpiece stands out against the city’s skyline. The Basilica has stunning mosaics, created with over 41,500,000 pieces in more than 8,000 colors, that are so unbelievably captivating. It’s no wonder it took over 75 years to create and install them all. (They even have a mosaic installed by Tiffany and Company!) Make sure to pick up a pamphlet on your way in so that you can read all about each mosaic’s depiction. If you’d like even more information, make sure to schedule a tour! Make sure to check out the website, linked above, for visiting hours. They vary based on what you’d like to see. Please note that you cannot see the cathedral during mass times, so plan accordingly.

Gateway Arch

No visit to St. Louis is complete without a trip to the iconic Gateway Arch. The colossal structure is not only a symbol of the city but also a symbol of American history and westward expansion. While your toddler might be too young to fully comprehend the historical significance, they’ll undoubtedly enjoy the sensory experience of looking up at this monumental steel arch.

If you walk down, under the ground beneath the arch, you’ll find a pretty spectacular museum. This was Poppy’s favorite part, as she loved running through the exhibits and exploring their most interactive ones. This is also where you’d take the tram. While we opted not to take the tram ride to the top until Poppy’s a bit older (and I’m a bit less scared of heights), this is a terrific option, allowing you to see the city from above. Take some time to enjoy the surrounding park area, take a picnic break, and let your toddler explore the open space while learning about this important landmark. It’s also a short walk to the St. Louis riverfront cruise, and you can get tickets as part of a combo pack in order to save money.

St. Louis Riverboat Cruise

For a relaxing and scenic family adventure, embark on a St. Louis riverfront cruise aboard a charming riverboat. As you glide along the Mississippi River, you and your little can soak in stunning city views and hear interesting facts about the city of St. Louis. Be sure to choose a daytime cruise that aligns with your toddler’s nap schedule, if you’d like to take advantage of the gentle sway of the boat. If you’d prefer to go when your kiddo is wide awake and ready to explore (which is the option we chose), bring along some snacks, something to drink, and sunscreen to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone. Unless you sit inside, you will need to switch sides of the boat in order to stay in the shade and catch the breeze on a hot day.

Citygarden

As you step into Citygarden, you’re immediately greeted by an impressive collection of modern sculptures that seamlessly integrate art with the natural landscape. I’ve honestly never seen a park that’s this well-ingrained into the hustle and bustle of a city. The park’s curated collection features works from renowned artists, many of the pieces encourage you to interact with them. Poppy’s favorite was the stone walkway through the middle of a waterfall fountain, which we were sure to hit during each trip through Citygarden. Another personal favorite was the Pinocchio statue. It brought me right back to my childhood.

Old Courthouse

As a history lover, the Old Courthouse was a building I just had to see. It holds such a significant place in American history as the site of pivotal events such as the famous Dred Scott trials. This building serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles for justice and equality that have shaped the nation, and it took me a while to get over the shock and awe of being able to see it in person. (I’m honestly not certain I’m over it even now.) Exploring its halls and chambers allows visitors to connect with the stories of those who sought their rights within its walls, making it an essential stop for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of St. Louis’s historical tapestry.

Tips and Tricks for Navigating St. Louis with a Toddler

  1. Plan Ahead: Research the opening hours, ticket prices, and any special events at the attractions you plan to visit. Having a rough itinerary will help you make the most of your time and manage your toddler’s schedule effectively. It’s also important to note that you can purchase tickets that allow access to several locations at a discount when compared to purchasing each separately.
  2. Be Flexible: Littles have their own pace and needs. Be prepared to adapt your plans if your little one needs a break or if something unexpectedly captures their attention.
  3. Pack Essentials: Bring a diaper bag filled with snacks, water, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, spare clothes, and any necessary toddler items. A stroller or carrier can also be incredibly helpful for getting around. Don’t be us and decide to leave both your stroller and carrier in the car. I can’t even remember the number of times we talked about wanting them with us.
  4. Timing Matters: Consider your toddler’s nap schedule when planning activities. Opt for morning visits when they’re well-rested and more likely to be in a good mood. This is also great advice when you want lower crowds.
  5. Engage and Educate: Use age-appropriate books, interactive apps, or child-friendly guides to introduce your toddler to the attractions you’ll be visiting. This can help build anticipation and enhance their understanding. Our favorite souvenir (in addition to Christmas ornaments) is a picture book from our destinations. They help us relive our experiences for years to come.
  6. Capture the Moments: Don’t forget to document your family adventure through photos and videos. These memories will be cherished for a lifetime.

To Summarize

Exploring St. Louis with a toddler is a journey filled with discovery, laughter, and unforgettable moments. From the intricate mosaics of the Cathedral Basilica to the soaring Gateway Arch, the tranquil riverfront cruise to the joyful playtime at Citygarden, not to mention the rich history of the Old Courthouse, every experience is an opportunity to bond as a family and create lasting memories. By planning ahead, staying flexible, and keeping your toddler’s needs in mind, you can navigate the city seamlessly and ensure that your adventure is as enjoyable for your little one as it is for you. So, pack your bags, gather your family, and embark on a St. Louis adventure that will leave you with stories to share and smiles to remember.
