Travel First Aid Kit Must Haves

The biggest mistake that people make when traveling is not packing a first aid kit. These are so essential when you have kiddos tagging along, for several reasons. The biggest reason is safety: it’s important that you have what you need if your little one gets hurt or sick, especially if your destination is off the beaten path. Here are our travel first aid kit must haves.

Bandages of various sizes

This is number one on our list, because we haven’t yet taken a trip where we didn’t need one. Whether it’s a bump, scratch, or blister, this variety pack has you covered.

Liquid Bandage

Okay, so you might ask why you need a liquid bandage if you already have a variety pack, like the one listed above. It’s for the awkward injury locations. When Poppy was little, she jerked her hand while I was cutting her nails, which caused me to cut the nail too short. It started bleeding immediately, and there was so much blood. None of the band-aids I had would cover that little finger well enough to stop the bleeding, so I put her in the car and went to the corner store. We were lucky that they had some liquid bandage, which stopped the bleeding immediately. From then on I swore I wouldn’t go without it. Don’t be like me. Buy it now.

Antiseptic Wipes

For cleaning a scrape, it’s important to have either an antiseptic wipe or solution on hand. While you could use either, I prefer to invest in individually packaged wipes, like the ones linked here. The individually packaged wipes don’t dry out as quickly as the ones in a bulk pack. I also prefer them over a solution, because then I don’t have to worry about bottle sizes on a flight.

Digital Thermometer

Have you ever been out and about, feel your little one’s head, and realize they feel warm? What happens when you don’t have a thermometer with you? If you’re anything like me, you start over-thinking things and feeling their forehead way too frequently. A digital thermometer will definitely ease your mind by giving you a fuller picture of how sick your little on is (or isn’t).

Nasal Aspirator

There are so many nasal aspirators out there; however, we have (and love) the one linked here. It’s electric, so you don’t have to suck the snot out yourself (but if that’s your thing, more power to you). We’ve found that this is our biggest helper, especially with the allergy congestion Poppy seems to get on every trip.

Nasal Saline Solution

When Poppy is really stuffy, we use a saline spray, in addition to the nasal aspirator. When I tell you that it cleans her out so fast, I’m not lying. Give it a try the next time your little one is stuffy, and let us know how much it changed your life!

Children’s Pain Reliever/Fever Reducer

Whether your little one is teething, has a fever, or has pain from an injury, having pain reliever on hand will be so helpful. And since you never know when those things will happen, it’s a great practice to travel with a bottle. Even though Poppy is a toddler, we still prefer to have one with a dosing syringe.

Allergy Medicine

This is an item on the list that not many people think of traveling with but will end up needing. We use these chewable allergy tabs, since they also dissolve. If your travel will include anything outdoors, I highly recommend that you bring these along.

Oral Hydration Packs

Whether you are going for a hike through the woods or on a trip to Disney World, these oral hydration packs are amazing. They help you stay hydrated much better than just drinking water alone. For those of you who have a little one that seems to always get constipated on a trip, that’s generally because their body isn’t getting as much fluid as it normally gets. Head off that constipation by using hydration packs!

Tweezers

Whether you’re picking debris out of a cut or getting a splinter out of a finger, tweezers are such a helpful tool. I love this pack, because the tweezers have different types of tips!

Baby Nail Clippers

On our last trip, I used these nail clippers at least three different times, and I almost didn’t pack them! They’re obviously great for regular nail trims, but they also come in so handy when Poppy breaks a nail.

Before going on a trip, I always check that our travel first aid kit must haves are all accounted for and packed in a cosmetic bag. When I’m flying, the kit will go in my carry on for easy access. When driving in a car or going on a train, I make sure that I put the bag in an easily-reachable location. This ensures that I’m not having to unpack the car, for instance, to get to the medical item that I may need. It’s also very important to point out that you should make sure all boxes/bottles that contain medicine, also have the dosing instructions attached.

Did I hit all of the important items? If there’s something I missed, please let us know in the comments!
